I highlighted that line in a book called Progressive Partnerships and my mind has been wrestling with it for two reasons...

.

1)I know it's true because I've set them up in my own business and for those of my clients

and 

2)I don't do nearly enough of them and I know my readers who own businesses would be helped by them.

.

My business is where it is today because of the strategic partnerships I HAVE set up and my business is where it is today because of the strategic partnerships I HAVEN'T set up.

.

Meaning that my business would be MUCH bigger if I had pursued more of them on a regular basis.

.

I actually LOVE setting them up for clients.

.

They are very easy, particularly if you already have a business and customers.

.

Yesterday, my chiropractor client gave me two business cards she had collected...one from a hearing aid store and one from a salon and spa.

.

She wants me to talk to them about strategic partnerships.

.

Assuming they don't already have a relationship with a chiropractor or an aversion to chiropractic, they will probably say yes.  

.

We'll then discuss how to best go about promoting each other to our respective lists.

.

My success at setting up strategic partnerships is nearly 90%.  

.

Are they all smashing successes?  

.

Nope.  

.

Not even close.

.

But the are VERY worth pursuing if you own a business.

.

Think about it.

.

Someone has already spent time, money and energy getting the trust of the customer YOU want.

They've got lists of them.

.

If you go to them with an offer they can't say no to, they will likely introduce you to their list.

.

Now obviously I don't know what kind of business you have so let's come up with an example from my own experience.

.

Back to the Chiropractor...she has about 400 patients on the books and I set up a strategic partnership with a restaurant on the other side of the parking lot.

.

Now, the patients can get a FREE pizza for their birthday from the restaurant any time during the month of their birthday.

.

The restaurant wins because NO ONE dines alone on their birthday. (The National Restaurant Association says the average birthday table is 4 people)

.

The restaurant will make money on drinks and other food purchased by the group and if they're smart they'll start building their own list of customers.

.

The chiropractor wins because she didn't have to pay for the pizza gift and patients she hasn't seen in awhile are coming back, in addition to all the goodwill from patients even if they don't get their pizza.

.

I set this up all via email and text message because I could never seem to catch the manager in the restaurant.

.

That's how easy they are to set up if you know how to present the offer and what NOT to say! 🙂

I have a restaurant client and in late 2014 and early 2015 I approached NINE different businesses in the same town with a simple question...would you be interested in a cross-promotion (strategic partnership) with the restaurant?

All nine businesses agreed to the cross-promo or strategic partnership with the restaurant...including a flower shop, insurance agency and a bakery.

I made some mistakes in setting them up but I've learned from those mistakes.

Here's another example of strategic partnerships...

This is a strategic partnership  between a food delivery service and a health club & spa.

The delivery service had an email list of former customers (my cousin is one) and they worked out a deal with the health club.

All food delivery customers got one free month membership to the club as a thank you.

-Complimentary one-hour personal training session to ensure you are on track to meet your health and fitness goals

It's a WIN/WIN

The delivery service wins because it looks good to their customers...even if a person doesn't use the offer, it leaves a good impression and reminds former customers that the delivery service is there.

.
The health club wins because it didn't cost them anything to get a trial customer and they know a certain percentage will stick around as paying members.

So here's my idea...

.

I want to set up 100 strategic partnerships in 100 days.

.

Actually, I want to set up 100 in 30 days but "100 in 100" sounds better and gives me some extra time during the warm summer months to relax.

.

In any case I want to help YOU set up some strategic promos for your business too.
