I've a had a real chance to play around with Forever.com and here's why I like it...
.
At the moment I have scanned in 2739 family pictures and documents. There are MANY more to go but I'm stopping the scanning for now. More on why shortly.
.
I love that I don't need to worry about categorizing the pictures before I scan them in. If it's within reach I scan it.
.
The scans go into the LIBRARY. The library has pictures from the 1920s to the 2020s next to each other. It doesn't matter.
.
Once in the library I can TAG the photos and also add them to an ALBUM if I want.
.
I tag the photos using names, locations, events & pets. I have a tag called Leo Sr Knows and one called Aunt Reta Knows.
.
I tag photos with those if I don't know the names of the people in the photos but my father or Aunt Reta do.
.
I send a link to my father or aunt Reta that includes all those photos and ask them to write down who is in the pictures and I will add tags with those names.
.
At this moment I have over 100 tags and expect I'll have over 200 when all is said and done.
.
.
I even have a tag called Harry Potter because there is one old pic of my sister in which she looks just like him...short hair and round glasses.
.
Sooo at some point in the future, people will be reviewing the tags...see one called Harry Potter, click it and laugh.
.
I'll go a long way for a joke.
.
Forever.com makes sharing of pictures super easy.
.
For example, my grandmother was a graduate of the Mount Sinai Hospital School of Nursing in NYC in 1934.
.
I have the program from that graduation.
.
After I scanned it in, I looked up that school and sent them an email asking if they'd like it for their archives.
.
I sent them a link with the images so they could actually see what I was talking about.
.
This replaces having to attach the six images to an email and hope that email got through their spam filters because people are reluctant to download things from people they don't know. A big hassle all around.
.
Alas, the gentleman appreciated the link and said that was good enough. No need for me to send the actual document.
.
As I'm finding funny or interesting pictures I can SELECT Them...
.
.
Click the SHARE button and get a link that allows people to only see those images.
.
The images I've selected above include great aunt Helen in the 1920s or 1930s.
.
If I knew where those pictures were taken, I'd add a tag with that too.
.
And as I add pics of her to that TAG, the link will automatically update itself. I won't have to send new links...the old ones will include the new pics I add.
.
I'm pausing the scanning of new pics for the moment to catch up on tagging the photos with names and locations.
.
This is a perfect thing to do on long, cold winter nights while I watch something on TV.
.
After the tagging, once I scan 50 pictures I can tag 50 pictures.
.
It slows down the scanning process but is better in the long run.
.
The sooner I get them tagged, the sooner I can get the links out to relatives for their feedback.
.
Feedback that can be added to the descriptions of the photos...
,
That description says..."Is it too late to SUE my parents for allowing me to wear that "collection" in 1982?"
.
Forever also has fields for the date an image is uploaded and the date it was taken.
.
In the case of scanned images, that date is the same but if you happen to know the date an image was taken you can edit it.
.
I know the image above was taken in 1982 because it was a party after our basketball season...23-1 thank you very much...but I don't know the exact date, so I'll put March 15, 1982 which is close.
.
Images taken with a digital camera or phone will automatically include the date an image is taken.
.
I like to tag images with the location so that we can see how a place changed over the years.
.
Here's me on my first day of Kindergarten in 1973 but I have no recollection of that door ever being there.
.
Prior to this project, I didn't even know this image existed.
.
So that's enough fawning over Forever.com for the day.

They give everyone a FREE 2GB account and a $20 discount just for giving your email. Click here to get that.
